LED Lighting Creates Opportunities for Analog Semiconductor Manu
Analysis
1.
Unlike more traditional lighting technologies LED's do not work
directly off the line voltage coming out of the wall socket. A
semiconductor driver has to be used to drive the semiconductor like LED
with the appropriate voltage and current to obtain the light output
required
2. The lighting designer has a number of factor to
consider in making the decision to drive (provide power) to the LED's.
How many LED's will he be driving, the current level, thermal
considerations will all help shape his decision on the LED driver. If
dimming is required this adds another level of complexity to the
selection process. The lighting designer can either decide to design
his own discrete semiconductor solution, or in many cases they will try
to use an off the shelf solution from an IC manufacturer.
3.
Many of the IC manufacturers are now offering off the shelf solutions
for driving LED's. This includes Infineon, POWI, International
Rectifier, Texas Instruments, National, Linear Tech, Maxim ,etc.
4.
In addition to Analog Semiconductor manufacturers, LED's also offer
other opportunities such as for small PC boards, connectors, and
secondary lens optics manufacturers.
